Every school participating in the project is assigned a trainer, who works with a small group of students over one
year to research and write good, interesting, balanced news stories, investigations and opinion articles. We also send people to run discussion clubs in the school every few weeks, open for anyone to attend, on any subjects that pupils want to talk about – whether local, national or international. Each school also has two assistant trainers – young people from the local area – who mentor and support students and help them to learn.
Pupils who attend the discussion clubs also have the chance to post their comments on the internet, in a monthly online discussion forum for all the schools in the project. This way, students can compare opinions and debate issues with other students from various parts of the country and backgrounds.
We don’t have any set topics or curriculum for the discussion clubs and the training course; both are led by students and by what they want to talk about. The idea is to challenge them to think about all sides of the story and compare all the opposing arguments.
